The First-Timer’s Guide to Visiting Rocky Mountain National Park from Estes Park

If Rocky Mountain National Park is on your travel list, Estes Park is one of the easiest and most memorable places to start. Located on the east side of the park, Estes Park gives travelers quick access to scenic drives, wildlife viewing, lake hikes, downtown restaurants, and classic Colorado mountain views.

For first-time visitors, the biggest key is planning ahead. Rocky Mountain National Park is open year-round, but timed entry reservations are required during certain hours from late May through mid-October. A valid entrance pass is also required at all times.

Know Before You Go

Rocky Mountain National Park uses timed entry reservations during the busy summer and early fall travel season. There are typically two reservation options. One includes access to the Bear Lake Road Corridor and the rest of the park. The other includes the rest of the park, excluding Bear Lake Road.

If this is your first Rocky Mountain National Park trip and you want to visit Bear Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, or other popular trails in that area, make sure you select the option that includes Bear Lake Road access.
